Chapada dos Veadeiros

Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park

A very well-preserved National Park with beautiful landscape of Cerrado biome, which is considered a hot-spot in the World, a very important kind of vegetation and unique on the Planet (mixing the Amazon and the dry savannas). The trails are easy and intermediate levels of difficulty, taking visitors with no great efforts to stunning mountains, valleys and waterfalls. This National Park has a very good access, only 3 hours driving from Brazil´s capital airport Brasília, which is in the middle of the country  and has a great connection between other destinations like Rio and the Amazon.

Highlights

Vale da Lua (Moon Valley)

This must be one of the most beautiful places in Brazil! Nearby the National Park, the perfect place to spend an afternoon enjoying the crystal-clear water and the panoramic view of Vale da Lua. It´s possible to park very close and an easy access trail takes us to this magical formation, caused by the dissolution of the carbonate cement that joins the quartz grians of the matrix rock – a paraconglomerate – looking like the Moon´s craters!

Segredo Waterfall

We consider this waterfall as the best hike in Chapada dos Veadeiros! A 14km trail, crossing the rivers São Miguel and Segredo several times, with natural crystal-clear water on the way and reaching the waterfall with 115m height. The beautiful waterfall seems hidden in the canyons, but local stories say that the miners used to keep this place in secret because of the gold found there, for that reason and the intermediate level trail to access it, the name “Segredo” meaning “Secret” waterfall.

Catarata dos Couros

A very easy trail leads to a combination of beautiful waterfalls for a whole day enjoying the baths. The crystal-clear water runs over the orange and gold colors of the rocks taking our sight to the canyon´s throat where a stunning landscape is reveled.

Santa Bárbara Waterfall

A truly oasis with turquoise-water is one of the main attractions in the region. Located in Cavalcante, around 90km away from Alto Paraíso de Goiás (the main small city that receives visitors of Chapada dos Veadeiros), but really worth the distance to enjoy this waterfall.

Saltos do Rio Preto

The National Park is very organized and has some self-guided trails. From São Jorge village, a short 900m walk lead to the entrance of the park, from where it´s possible to go to the waterfalls and valleys. The Saltos do Rio Preto (Black River Falls) trail is a 11km hike that leads to a lookout of this beautiful 120m height waterfall and the valley in front of it. Continuing the trail, the Garimpão waterfall with 80m height is the place to have a nice swim in the black-water pool and rest from the hike.

When is the best season?

The best time to enjoy Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is from April to September. Sometimes rainy season can arrive a little early, by the second half of October. Cerrado biome has a different behavior, it is very dry and sunny during almost the whole year, but receive heavy rain from November to March. We recommend to avoid the rainy season in this National Park, once many trails and attractions can be out of reach.
